We are working with a next-generation battery materials company on the search for a Senior Environmental Health and Safety Specialist.
Location: On-site, Denver, CO
Employment type: Full-time, exempt
Team: Environmental Health and Safety
About the company
Our client develops advanced materials for the next generation of electric vehicle batteries, and its material is already being evaluated by major automotive and cell-manufacturing partners. The company is moving from pilot production toward larger-scale manufacturing, which puts process safety, chemical management, and emergency readiness at the center of the operation rather than on the side of it.
About the role
This role is a key member of the EHS team, partnering with operations, engineering, maintenance, laboratory, and business teams to strengthen safety performance, ensure regulatory compliance, and support Process Safety Management (PSM) implementation.
You will advance EHS programs, chemical inventory management, emergency preparedness, training coordination, hazard analysis, and continuous improvement efforts across the company's facilities, and you will have real influence on how safety performance is built into a growing manufacturing operation at every level of the organization.
Responsibilities
Support and enforce compliance with OSHA, EPA, NFPA, and other applicable environmental, health, and safety regulations.
Partner with the Chemical Hygiene Officer to maintain chemical inventory systems, safety data sheet (SDS) databases, and chemical labeling programs in accordance with GHS requirements.
Conduct routine safety audits, hazard assessments, job safety analyses (JSAs), facility walkthroughs, and specialized assessments, including fire safety and arc flash compliance reviews, as required.
Lead or support incident investigations, perform root cause analyses, and ensure corrective actions are implemented and tracked to closure.
Collaborate with operations, maintenance, laboratory, and engineering teams to integrate safe work practices into daily operations and projects.
Monitor and report leading and lagging safety indicators, incident trends, audit findings, and risk assessments to support continuous improvement and resource planning.
Support hazardous material inventory management, hazardous waste stewardship, cost-containment initiatives, and spending reviews against safety KPIs.
Coordinate and support EHS training programs, regulatory training requirements, and workforce competency initiatives.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Safety Management, Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field.
7+ years of EHS experience with at least 2+ years in a high-hazard industrial manufacturing environment.
OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.
Experience supporting chemical, industrial gas, battery manufacturing, or similarly regulated industrial operations.
Experience conducting incident investigations, root cause analyses, safety audits, hazard assessments, and risk assessments.
Experience managing chemical inventory systems, SDS administration, hazardous materials, and hazardous waste programs.
Working knowledge of OSHA regulations and industrial safety standards.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and EHS management systems.
Strong communication, organizational, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently.
Demonstrated ability to rapidly assess risk, respond to incidents, and make sound decisions in dynamic situations.
Nice-to-have
Current HAZWOPER 40-hour certification and DOT hazardous waste training.
Knowledge of OSHA Process Safety Management (29 CFR 1910.119), Chemical Hygiene and Laboratory Safety requirements (29 CFR 1910.1450), Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), and NFPA 70E electrical safety practices.
Experience with EHS management platforms such as VelocityEHS, Cority, SAM, or similar systems.
Experience with hazardous waste profiling, manifest review, and waste management processes.
Experience supporting Emergency Response Teams (ERT), emergency management programs, or incident command activities.
Conflict resolution and de-escalation skills, with clear communication across all levels of the organization.
Working environment
Work in offices, laboratories, and manufacturing environments.
Regularly walk and stand throughout production and operational areas.
Wear required personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, steel-toe shoes, hearing protection, and other protective equipment as required.
Wear a respirator and participate in the company respiratory protection program, with reasonable accommodation where applicable.
Work around chemicals, industrial equipment, forklifts, batteries, manufacturing systems, and other operational processes.
Occasionally lift and carry materials weighing up to 25 pounds, with reasonable accommodation where applicable.
Travel between the company's facilities as business needs require.
What we offer
The chance to shape the safety program of a battery materials manufacturer while it scales, plus a comprehensive benefits package: medical, dental, and vision insurance, employer-paid life and disability coverage, 401(k) with company match, paid holidays, generous PTO, paid family leave, and eligibility for bonus and equity plans.
Offers are contingent on a background check and on compliance with applicable government access control requirements. This role does not offer visa sponsorship of any kind, including transfers and TN status.
